Do you know why the sales people at the game stores snort and snicker when you ask if they have any Wii's in stock? It's because they DID have Wii's in stock just recently, but they bought their own store's Wii's to sell on eBay or craigs list and make a quick $200.

Hey John!

Great post as usual! It seems to me the art of the relationship is on the wane. How many folks understand everything in your life is a long series of relationships? If you're a greedy so-and-so at work, is it any wonder it spills over at home? Where does it come from at work if it isn't already in you? Salesmanship on any level begins with the understanding you know how you want to be treated. If it's that much of a stretch for you to realize selling people what they already want is more about establishing a relationship with them than any other, you're toast. One they can believe in and trust at least a little bit goes a lot farther to getting you on the sold page than any single idea you can come up with.

Understand the relationship of your target market to the product and it's benefits become obvious enough you can write the bullets in such a way that little segment got him. That one will get her. Etc. Develop your relationship skills in one part of your life and be open to how much they apply everywhere. You just never saw it before. Establish a relationship with your customer and you're golden. I work at a convenience store. I teach all the kids who come in to take the time to get to know the people, what they like, don't like and if they forget something they usually get, ask them about it. You'd be surprised how many folks come back because I make every person check the eggs before a customer walks out with them!

How simple yet the impression is long lasting. We have people who bypass other stores, by as much as several miles, to avoid the grocery store but go somewhere where they will feel welcome. Other customers marvel when they come in the store and we are talking, laughing or joking with someone we call by name as we take care of their order. It's infectious. Now put that in print and you've got gold.

Great stuff and THANK YOU!

Great post! It's a shame that the customer never seems to be right anymore, it's the same with everything nowadays, even banks!

I did have one good experience recently with James Brausch, but I wish there were more businessess which respected their customers!

Wii Don't Suck, YOU Suck...

There's something to learned from observing Bad sales people in action.
In fact, if you're committing any of the same insulting blunders -- online
or offline -- it very much is costing you money. And you need to stop it,
right now....

Great as usual. And thought provoking ("just do your job...")

I took the advice of my Vegas cab driver once, and I learned that
hookers know a thing or two about forced continuity.

Hey John,
About your Wii hunt… I have a friend who owns an indy retail video game store (talk about an industry that really doesn’t want the little guy to make it), and in order for him to get a Wii, his supplier makes him purchase a bunch of other software (that no one wants) with it for $700.

He tells most people to go to Target or Best Buy on Sunday mornings at open (they typically restock overnight on Saturdays for the new Sunday ads). Good luck!
