mlm's offer and bring in the best trainers they can find .. the motivational industry was built bye the mlm industry. Mlm's where never for me . but they are for some people . i used supplements .. but beyond the mulivitamine i take .. the other vitamins i take when i really need them . anytime i have looked at the supplement mlm's i just couldn't see paying the extra money .

in any field there is a pyramid setup.. where the top one percent get about 30 % of the cash ... then it less and less get shared bye more and more . that is the natural order in a free market .and it works out in mlm's too ..

It's sad that the word MLM has gotten to the point that everyone
thinks it's a scam. I'll admit that most MLM opportunities are
nothing more then selling the dream.

However, I would have no problem going back to building a
Pre Paid Legal organization. I believe in that product and can
sell that service all day long. Therefore I would have no problem
recruiting in other sales people to do the same.

On the flip side I've seen MLM's that ruined people's lives. My ex
In-Laws are all doing about 10 years behind bars because they
were the top honchos in a MLM that was labeled a pyramid scheme.
Not a pretty site for anyone in that organization.

The idea of MLM is amazing to me. I personally love it, but it's
been seriously tainted by lazy sales people who want to sell the
dream and not the product.

The big problem that I see is that people are beginning to associate
affiliate programs that pay on a 2nd tier to MLM scams. This comparison
is ridiculous but most people have no real idea what affiliate marketing
is anyways.

Sadly, the MLM sheisters have given lot's of marketers a bad name. However
I'm not willing to throw all the MLM salesmen into the fire pit yet. I know of
some very reputable and honest people that are doing well for themselves
and their organizations without having to result to the typical hype that
most MLM's reps get tangled up with.

Sadly these guys are like a needle in a haystack in this world. It's a shame!

Can't we all just sell some stuff and get along?

Right on, John.

Look on a dollar bill and you'll find a pyramid...

I almost got sucked into an MLM (Amway) when I was fresh out of college and desperate for work/money. Got sucked into copywriting instead.

I do some health copywriting (supplements and such), and I'm really skeptical about a lot of what comes my way. So getting into PubMed and the "literature" is really important to me. Just to know I'm not peddling snake oil. And if I am? I'll pass, thanks.

Great post,

I'm a Herbalife distributor & I can tell you that the Herbalife product is a quality product that does what they say it does. Have you ever used any of the Herbalife product John? I would be doing my due due diligence before hamming it up here for your punter's.

Remember it is one person opinion. As you mentioned about beleif, this is your belief. Oh & by the way pyramids are illegal.

Think about it.

John, sounds to me like you got your latest Playboy and read the article on Mangosteen. That makes two of us who actually read the articles, 8)

Ahh, the good old days of Amway, I remember the crazy-eyed old lady who tried to take me under her wing and had a great job lined up for me, and then how I wanted to run screaming when I realized that free dinner she promised me was to get me to sit in on an Amway presentation.

I love to study the MLM schemes and scams that are masquerading as legitimate business models. They are endlessly entertaining to a skeptical market like me. What is the big one that is raking in all the cash at the moment??? I'm dying to know...

John,

This is one of the best articles I have EVER read! I'm now 34 and have a solid business, but for years I was mesmerized by the mlm and crap out there. Now I just study their process and don't pay any attention to the goop! I wish more people would read this article and really let it sink in. I have friends who are still searching for the miracle. Thanks for the reminder John!

John,
How right you are. Just about everything i have seen from the so-called marketing gurus starts off by firing up the greed glands. Unless what you are selling is of genuine utility and lives up to your claims, it will get increasingly difficult to stay in business. I have known this for years, coming from an engineering background. Engineers are a cynical bunch. Tell them what you are selling is six inches long, and they will just happen to have a steel ruler in their jacket pocket and will measure it.
there's no money in engineering, but you sure are up close and personal with reality.
Of course, there have to be exceptions to the rule. How does the cosmetic industry survive?
