I though missive worked especially well there. Epistle is another favorite synonym for letter.

Great advice, John.

And comforting. Sometimes I think I spend way too much time editing and rewriting, wondering if I'm ever going to get it right.

And to my shock and horror, I too find those creepy apostrophes inserting themselves in words I merely wish to pluralize. It must be some kind of virus. Think?

Your point on emoticoms is well taken. I might have been tempted to drop one in here.

Ahhh....

I feel MUCH better now.

Why?

I got a punch in the heart with a million dollar advice whatever people call it and it sparked my head up lighter than the sun -- on how to write Godlike copies.

Thanks man, Nice Punch that was.

Nicely said. It can never be pointed out too often that great copy is not written as much as it is rewritten. Constant, relentless rewrite separates the working professionals from the whining wannabes. (Thank God, however, for deadlines, or I'd still be polishing my first letter, 25 years later!)

Carry on.

John

WOW! What can I say...

Your wisdom goes well beyond the words you have typed here. The wisdom on this page extends to life in general, here is how...

I think we go through life as human beings and look for the "short cut" or "easy way" to do things. You cannot get 100% of the results without 100% of the effort required to produce those results.

Rewriting and editing, then rewriting and editing (I am not a copy god, yet, like you John) is the ONLY way to produce the earth - shattering copy to WOW our clients!

Thanks for the blog John, it is class acts like you that give us "rookies" something to look forward to.

Back to my rewriting and editing...gotta satisfy another client =)

How's that desk look John?

While not a "rookie", I realize that I've been guilty of the "irrelevant tangent". It brings me back to frames of reference and the understanding that not everyone ticks the way I do. Thanks for the reminder to get outside of my own head and move prospect through the sale as opposed to entertaining myself because I think others might enjoy the aside.

I look forward to gleaning more wisdom in Redondo Beach.

Thanks for sharing those thoughts, John. I'm a writer from a different arena just starting to approach copywriting, and that clarifies the relationship between copywriter and audience more clearly than anything else I've read so far--at least in a way that caught my attention. I think I'll try listening to Side A of Led Zeppelin IV when I'm writing my first real-world piece too, just to keep the mood on.

All great points ... and purposely misspelling "message" with "missive" just added to the impact of this post ... " no matter how casual the missive is." [Note from John: Nope, missive is the right word. Look it up. It should be in your vocabulary...]
